Introduction
Georgius Agricola is closely associated with the early history of mining in Jáchymov. As a town physician during the peak of silver mining, he gained first-hand knowledge of mining techniques and conditions.
History
His experiences in Jáchymov later formed the basis of his most famous work, “De re metallica” (1556), which became a fundamental treatise on mining and metallurgy for centuries. The memorial recalls his years of activity in the town. The original metal plaque, however, was stolen and replaced by a plastic version that does not match the quality of the original.
Description
The memorial consists of a stone pillar bearing a relief portrait of Agricola in Renaissance attire. Beneath the portrait was an inscription indicating his profession and the years he worked in Jáchymov. The current plastic plaque preserves the basic layout but is materially and aesthetically inferior.
Restoration
Although the structure of the memorial survives, the loss of the original plaque significantly reduces its authenticity. A future restoration replacing the current plaque with a dignified version would better reflect the importance of Georgius Agricola and Jáchymov’s mining heritage.
