The Town Hall of Jáchymov is one of the most significant secular buildings in the town. Originally a prestigious residence of the Schlik family, its rear wing housed the first mint where the famous Joachimsthalers were struck. Since 1531 the building has served as the town hall. After numerous reconstructions, it is now home to the Municipal Office, the Information Centre with the exhibition of the Latin Library, and the Municipal Library. Its architectural development reflects the town’s economic rise, devastating fires, and changing architectural styles over several centuries.

The State Tobacco Factory in Jáchymov was one of the most important industrial enterprises in the town during the 19th and the first half of the 20th century. Its establishment was a direct response to severe economic hardship in the Ore Mountains region. For decades, it ranked among the largest employers in the area. The factory’s history reflects changing state economic policies, wartime production, and the post-war transformation of an industrial complex.

The building of the so-called Old School represents a significant example of late 19th-century school architecture in Jáchymov. Its construction was prompted not only by the need to improve accessibility to education but also by a representational effort marking the fiftieth anniversary of the coronation of Emperor Franz Joseph I. The building later played an important role in the development of Czech education in the town, while its fate after 1989 reflects broader issues related to the management of historic buildings in the region.

For several centuries, the Jáchymov brewery ranked among the town’s most significant economic enterprises. Its development from a system of brewing-right houses in the early modern period to a municipal brewery and its eventual post-war closure reflects changes in urban administration, technological progress, and political intervention in the regional economy.
OLD MINT
2026-03-01
he remains referred to as the Old, or former, Mint in Jáchymov represent a somewhat overlooked element of the town’s historical structure, despite being located in the immediate vicinity of the monumental building of the Royal Mint. Their inconspicuous nature contrasts with their potential importance for understanding the beginnings of coin production in a town that ranked among the most important economic centres of the early modern period. The fact that the site was the subject of an independent building-historical survey by Jan Muk, prepared for the State Institute for the Reconstruction of Historic Towns and Objects (SÚRPMO), indicates the high heritage value of the preserved structures.¹
The aim of this study is to place the remains of the Old Mint within the broader historical, urban, and technological context of the development of the Jáchymov mint complex and, on the basis of available sources, to assess their probable function and significance.
