SCOUT MEMORIAL MOUND
Introduction
The mound was erected on 30 May 1992 at the location of the former Eliáš labour camp. It honours scouts who, following the dissolution of the Junák organisation, were interned and compelled to work in the uranium mines of Jáchymov. The site forms part of the network of memorial places recalling the persecution of youth and civic organisations after 1948.
Description
The mound is composed of stones from various uranium mines and camps. Passers-by may add their own stone as a symbolic gesture of remembrance. The dominant feature is a seven-metre-high wooden cross bearing the scout fleur-de-lis and a crown of thorns. The first cross was erected in the presence of scouts from Karlovy Vary and Jáchymov and was blessed by the Jáchymov dean, Fr. František Krásenský SJ. The cross has been replaced several times, as the harsh climatic conditions cause the wood to deteriorate quickly despite protective treatment.
Origin
The main initiator of the memorial was Kamil Růžička together with members of the Confederation of Political Prisoners – I. Slavíček, V. Sedláček, S. Jirčík, A. Růžičková, J. Goldman and L. Blann.
