JÁCHYMOV – gateway to the Ore Mountains

An inconspicuous building on Republic Square whose architecture attracted little attention, yet whose history reflects the social and political changes of the town. Its most visible and saddest chapter was its gradual decay, culminating in complete demolition after 2020.

A Renaissance patrician house from the mid-sixteenth century, later altered in the Baroque period and modified after the great fire of 1873. In 1861 it was adapted by the Congregation of the Sisters of Charity of St. Charles Borromeo as a convent with a Neo-Gothic chapel in the courtyard. Preserved Renaissance core with ribbed vaults and valuable façade elements.

Patrician House No. 18 is one of the historic buildings of Republic Square whose form developed from the town’s foundation onwards. Its Renaissance core, Baroque alterations and Classical façade illustrate architectural development from the sixteenth to the twentieth century.

An inconspicuous burgher house in which the world’s first radon spa operation was established in 1906. The building represents the symbolic birthplace of the town’s radon spa tradition.

Patrician House No. 11 is an inconspicuous yet structurally valuable building of the historic centre. Its Renaissance core dating from around 1540 preserves an authentic structural framework and original urban layout.

Patrician House No. 10 is among the most valuable burgher houses of the historic centre. Its Renaissance core dating from around 1540 preserves its original layout and important architectural details, later complemented by Baroque and modern alterations.

Patrician House No. 292 is one of the most valuable burgher houses of the historic town centre. Built in the first half of the sixteenth century, it is closely associated with the mining clerk Wolf Thiel. Its Renaissance portal of 1543 ranks among the most significant stoneworks in the town.

The so-called Coal House No. 117 is one of the most important surviving examples of a characteristic burgher-house type. Dating back to 1527, the building preserves valuable Renaissance and Baroque structural layers.

Patrician House No. 126 is one of the historically significant burgher houses of the town centre. It dates from the mid-sixteenth century, the period of greatest prosperity, when the town ranked among the richest mining towns in Bohemia.

Patrician House No. 270 is one of the significant buildings of the historic town centre. Its Renaissance core dates from around 1543, and the house is particularly renowned for its exceptionally high-quality entrance portal, one of the most remarkable surviving examples of Renaissance stone carving in the town.
