HEINRICH VON KÖNNERITZ (1483–1551)

Saxon nobleman, the first mining governor and mint master of Jáchymov, and co-author of the town’s mining code. He belonged to the group of figures who stood at the very beginnings of the development of the famous mining town.
HLOUŠEK JAN, RNDr. (1950–2014)

Mineralogist, geologist, historian and researcher closely connected with Jáchymov. He devoted his life to the study of local minerals and created one of the most important collections documenting the mineralogy of the Jáchymov ore district.
JOHANNES MATHESIUS (1504–1565)

Evangelical priest, reformer, town chronicler and founder of the first parish register in the Czech lands. A close student and friend of Martin Luther who spent most of his life in Jáchymov, where he served as rector of the Latin school, preacher and parish priest and where he died in 1565.
GEORGIUS AGRICOLA (1494–1555)

Physician, humanist and scholar of European importance, regarded as the founder of modern mineralogy, geology and mining science. Between 1527 and 1530 he served as municipal physician and pharmacist in Jáchymov, where he gathered knowledge that later formed the basis of his famous scientific works.
VENCESLAUS PAYER (1488–1537)

Court physician of the Schlik family and municipal doctor in Jáchymov. In 1523 he published one of the earliest descriptions of a disease caused by working conditions in mines and is therefore regarded as a pioneer of occupational medicine.
LEOPOLD GOTTLIEB (1852–1912)

Municipal physician, balneologist and one of the pioneers of spa treatment in Jáchymov. At the beginning of the twentieth century he was among the first physicians to investigate the therapeutic effects of radon water from the local mines.
ANTON PETER BÖHM (c. 1785–c. 1870)

Catholic priest, dean of the parish of Jáchymov and historian of the town. From 1815 to 1860 he served as parish priest and dean in Jáchymov and devoted much of his life to documenting the history of the town and its mines.
JOHANNES SYLVIUS EGRANUS (1480–1535)

Theologian, humanist and reformer connected with the early Reformation. He worked as a preacher in several towns of Saxony and the Bohemian lands and spent part of his life in Jáchymov, where he died in 1535.
NIKOLAUS HERMAN (1480 or 1500–1561)

Teacher at the Latin school in Jáchymov and an important author of early Lutheran hymnody. He spent most of his life in the town and contributed significantly to the development of Protestant church music.
JOSEF ŠTĚP (1863–1926)

Mining administrator, ministerial councillor and imperial privy councillor who played an important role in the origins of the spa tradition in Jáchymov. From 1896 he worked in the town and significantly contributed to the development of mining and to the use of radium and radon water for therapeutic purposes.
