PATRICIAN HOUSE NO. 292
Introduction
House No. 292 on Republic Square was erected during the town’s greatest prosperity. From the outset it served as a representative patrician residence, clearly expressing the social standing of its owner.
History
The builder was the mining clerk Wolf Thiel, a member of the administrative elite responsible for the economic and legal operation of mining activities. Mining clerks maintained official records, documented mining property rights and supervised silver revenues. They were educated and influential figures operating between municipal administration, mining entrepreneurs and authorities.
The surname Thiel suggests Saxon origin, consistent with the character of the early town. After the fire of 1873 the building was altered and a half-storey added. In the 1960s the façade was simplified to its present appearance.
Description
The building faces the street with its eaves side and has two full storeys and a later-added half-storey. The façade towards the square is divided into eight irregular window axes.
The dominant feature is the sandstone Renaissance portal dated 1543 in the form of an aedicule. Stylistically it belongs to early Saxon Renaissance and is associated with the circle of the stonemason Jörg of Bamberg. Slender columns with composite capitals support a profiled cornice and a superstructure bearing the builder’s emblem. The composition is crowned by a triangular pediment with the symbol of the Eye of God and the completion date.
Inside, a passage vaulted with Gothic-Renaissance groin vaults is preserved. At the rear stands an original two-flight stone staircase with a solid handrail. The roof structure is a collar-beam truss with a standing frame.
Heritage Value
House No. 292 is an outstanding testimony to the town’s golden age. It combines high-quality Renaissance architecture, well-preserved structural elements and significant artistic craftsmanship. It also represents a material reflection of the ambitions and social confidence of sixteenth-century mining officials.
