JAKOB SCHEDLICH (1591–1669)
Origin and family
Jakub Schedlich was probably born in March 1591 in Jáchymov, where he also died on 29 December 1669. His father Andreas Schedlich served as mayor of the town.
His younger brother David Schedlich (1607–1687) became a well-known composer.
Education
Schedlich studied music in Nuremberg with the composer Hans Leo Hassler. There he also learned organ playing and the construction of organs.
He also worked as a clockmaker and repaired watches, which indicates a strong knowledge of mechanics and fine technical work.
Career in Jáchymov
In 1607 he returned to Jáchymov, where he worked as an organist, clockmaker and cantor. Among his responsibilities was the maintenance of the town clocks on the Church of St Joachim and the clock on the Bread Market.
In 1619 he became a member of the town council and was responsible for matters concerning the town’s orphans. In 1624 he was appointed inspector and was also responsible for supervising customs officers.
Organ workshop
In 1625 he founded an organ-building workshop in Jáchymov. The workshop gained considerable reputation and supplied organs to many towns in Bohemia and Saxony.
Between 1625 and 1666 he and his workshop built numerous instruments.
Mayor of the town
From 1633 Schedlich served as mayor of Jáchymov, a position he held until his death in 1669.
