EL CABRIL REPOSITORY – SPAIN
Visiting One of the World's Leading Facilities
My visit to the Spanish El Cabril facility was an exceptionally interesting and valuable experience. This installation has long been considered one of the most modern and highly regarded radioactive waste disposal facilities in the world and is regularly assessed by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). Simply having the opportunity to gain an insight into the operation of such an important facility was extremely beneficial and provided access to information that is often difficult to obtain from publicly available sources.
The El Cabril facility is located in Andalusia near the city of Córdoba and forms a key part of Spain’s radioactive waste management system. The entire site has been designed with a strong emphasis on safety, long-term control of stored materials, and maximum protection of the surrounding environment. The facility includes not only disposal capacities themselves but also modern monitoring systems, laboratories, and technical infrastructure that allow continuous supervision of all operational processes.
Expert Lectures and Exchange of Experience
The visit included an expert presentation focusing on the history, present status, and future development of the El Cabril repository, as well as a comparison of radioactive waste management systems in Spain and the Czech Republic. Particularly interesting was the comparison of the different approaches adopted by the two countries and the opportunity for open discussion with specialists who have been involved in this field for many years.
The discussions covered not only the technical aspects of radioactive waste disposal but also public communication, legislative frameworks, and long-term energy planning.
Appreciation for the Organisers
The entire excursion was organised at an exceptionally high professional and organisational level. My sincere thanks therefore go to the Radioactive Waste Repository Authority (SÚRAO) for the invitation and the excellent organisation of the event.
Special recognition is due to the Director of SÚRAO, RNDr. Lukáš Vondrovic, Ph.D., for supporting similar professional meetings and providing the opportunity to gain valuable information directly on site. Thanks are also extended to the entire organising team, who prepared a truly professional programme and created a very pleasant atmosphere throughout the visit.
The Importance of the Visit
For me, the visit to El Cabril was not merely a professional excursion but also an interesting opportunity to better understand how different countries approach the issue of radioactive waste disposal and how important long-term public trust, safety, and international cooperation are in this field.
Such meetings are extremely valuable not only from the perspective of professional knowledge but also because they allow the sharing of experience and the search for inspiration for the future.
