PERIOD 2016–2024
– Year-long celebrations marked the 500th anniversary of the foundation of the town of Jáchymov. Both its mining and spa traditions were commemorated, as well as its exceptional significance in European history.
– The Erzgebirge/Krušnohoří Mining Region was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List on 6 July. The inscription includes the historic mining monuments of Jáchymov (e.g. the Svornost, Bratrství, Rovnost and Eliáš mines and other related sites). This represents the most significant international recognition of the town’s mining history since its foundation.
– The COVID-19 pandemic led to the temporary closure of spa facilities and a substantial restriction of tourism. It resulted in the greatest interruption of spa operations since the Second World War.
– 150 years since the devastating fire of 1873, which fundamentally altered the appearance of the town within a matter of hours. The anniversary once again highlighted the vulnerability of the historic built environment and the importance of the preserved monuments.
– The energy crisis significantly affected spa operations as well as municipal buildings, particularly with regard to the high energy demands of the extensive historic structures.
– Gradual stabilisation of spa operations following the pandemic and the return of both domestic and international visitors. At the same time, the town continued to promote its mining landscape in connection with its UNESCO status.
– As a result of long-term structural deterioration and economic unsustainability, several former facilities associated with the uranium industry, as well as abandoned buildings dating from the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, were demolished or definitively lost. These demolitions further altered the historic skyline of the town and opened a debate on the protection of the remaining industrial and spa architecture of the second half of the 20th century.
