PERIOD 1951–2016
1951 – The district of Jáchymov is abolished; the secret “Jizera” zone is established. Camp L (“Red Tower of Death”) is founded.
1952 – 13,500 prisoners work in the mines, 8,000 of them political prisoners.
1953 – New school opened; administrative restructuring of the security zone.
1956 – National Enterprise Jáchymov Mines established with 14,000 employees.
1961 – Closure of the Rovnost camp; 65,000 prisoners had passed through the local mines.
1963 – Jáchymov becomes an official spa town.
1965 – Town museum opened; cable car to Klínovec built.
1968 – Warsaw Pact troops enter the town on 20 August.
1975 – Opening of the Běhounek Sanatorium.
1981 – Dam burst of the town pond causes flooding.
1985 – Earthquake measuring 4.9 on the Richter scale.
1990 – First meeting of former political prisoners.
1992 – Reconstruction of the Svornost mine completed; Curie spa complex opened.
1997 – Visit of President Václav Havel.
2006 – Spa celebrates 100 years of existence.
2016 – Year-long celebrations marking 500 years since the town’s foundation.
